![]() Parked the car and took the walkway over the dunes. We continued along the road, and saw another group off in the distance, just standing around in the marsh. We hopped out of the car and began shooting lots of photos. After crossing the bridge to the seashore, we drove along the road for a minute or two and came across the first group of horses. Found out that there are 125 horses at the seashore. Stopped at the information booth, to ask about the horses. We were staying in New Jersey, and took the ferry from Cape May to Lewes, Delaware, and then drove about an hour to Assateague. The next day we did it all over again, because that's what you do on a beach weekend. After that excitement, we headed back into town, got delicious takeout from Ledo Pizza and ate at the hotel along the bay. The four ponies were then right along the road giving the passing tourists a close up look at the famous animals. One mare had wandered into away from the group into the marsh, but the stallion trotted out and rounded her up. And at the far side of the trail we came upon a small group of the Chincoteague ponies - a stallion and three mares. Along the fresh water catchments we spied great egrets, snowy egrets, blue herons, and black skimmers. Beware, the asian tiger mosquitos are vicious and bite all day long bring repellent, but don't be deterred. After packing up, we decided to drive along the nature loop, which opens to vehicle traffic after 3 pm. I got lots of great photos for my photography website. Ring-billed, black backed, and laughing gulls stood watch nearby. Sanderlings just in from their nesting grounds in the artic dashed in and out of the surf while a long legged Willet sauntered amongst them. At about 6 pm, with most of the crowd leaving, we walked along the beach collecting shells and watching the shorebirds. It was low tide and we could walk out a significant distance and still be in 5 feet of water, playing in the waves and catching the occasional breaker. ![]() After the initial shock, the water was actually rather warm. Since it was hot it didn't take long to go into the water. As expected the beach was crowded but we settled in for the afternoon. After about 45 minutes of enrichment we tried the road to the beach again and got to the shore without delay. You can learn about endangered piping plovers, the long distance migration of peregrine falcons (winter in the Argentine doesn't sound bad), and theories on how the ponies got to the island. This spacious facility has a great set of exhibits about the wildlife and history of the island. After sitting in a traffic backup for a few minutes, decided that this is not how I wanted to spend my vacation so I turned around and headed back to the snazzy National Park Visitor center. Unfortunately, it being a hot summer weekend, the lots at the beach were overfilled. After a relaxing first morning, we headed to the beach after lunch. While Chincoteague is a small, yet bustling, tourist town, Assateague Island and Beach are within a National Park, which helps maintain its natural setting. Just 50 miles south of Ocean City, this beach is a world away from the high-rise developments of that resort city. Assateague is one of my favorite beaches on the mid-Atlantic seaboard. The back deck is a great place to eat breakfast and just while away the morning, reading books, watching the ducks, and feeling the refreshing breeze. This is a great hotel right on the bay overlooking the old drawbridge. Stayed at our usual haunt at the Hampton Inn on Main Street. After a temperate July in Maryland, the weather turned hot and sticky in August and the beach was a great place to be. Had another wonderful long weekend at Chincoteague and Assateague in early August. ![]() ![]() “But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie. “We of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has,” Robbie says. The first issue consisted of a single sheet that folded down to 16 A5 pages. It became an A5 fortnightly before going weekly as an A4 magazine in 1970. A second issue followed three weeks later. The early issues were a folded sheet and various estimates put the first issue sales at 3,500-5,000 copies. Harris gained fame as ‘Whispering Bob’ presenting BBC TV’s Old Grey Whistle Test from 1972 (the series was cancelled in 1987 by Janet Street-Porter, who was head of youth programmes, and was divorced from Elliott). Elliott was studying French at Keele University, and the magazine was nearly called Where It's At. It was formulated by Tony Elliott (aged 21) with Bob Harris (aged 22). Time Out had more in common with underground magazines such as Oz or International Times. However, there was little comparison to its potential rivals: it was not weekly, did not use a magazine format, focused on listings rather than features, and was a left-wing agitprop magazine. Time Out cost a shilling when it hit the streets in August 1968. It was a straightforward guide to commercial entertainment for visitors to the capital. The covers usually advertised the latest film and a West End cinema. What’s On in London was a traditional listings weekly, focusing on ‘news, views and notes about all of London’s entertainments’, according to its covers in 1948. Pigott-Brown, nicknamed the ‘sporting baronet’, was an Old Etonian who had inherited a fortune and spent the rest of his life spending it, as a man-about-town and racing enthusiast. In his autobiography, Diary of a Teddy Boy, Mim Scala describes how, along with Sir William Pigott-Brown, he had taken over the name London Life and changed the name to Look of London. The latter was another product of the Swinging Sixties. So, when Tony Elliott was working on his new magazine in 1968, there were just two rivals around: What’s On in London and the Londoner, a renamed version of the features-focused Look of London. At 2/6, it was expensive – five times the price of the Radio Times – and a very upmarket failure. The first issue was in October 1965 but it closed at Christmas 1966. His team included David Hillman and David Puttnam, with Jean Shrimpton as a consultant fashion editor and photographers such as Terence Donovan, Duffy and Ron Traeger. ![]() London Life was very much for the Swinging Sixties smart set, of which Boxer was himself a member. London Life was a relaunch of Tatler as a weekly listings magazine under editor Mark Boxer, who had made his name launching the colour supplement at the Sunday Times for Lord Thomson. Among the many titles have been London Mail (1912-26), London Life (1920-60), Piccadilly (1926-29), What’s On in London (1934-77), London Off Duty (1946), Show Business & What’s Doing in London (1950), London Life ( Tatler relaunch, 1965-66), London Look (1967), Look of London (1967), and The Londoner (1968). London has rarely been short of weekly magazines devoted to its events, culture and nightlife. Bob Harris and Tony Elliott were the joint editors What's On in London from June 1959 with a Frankie Vaughan cover for The Heart of a Man filmĬover of Time Out's first issue dated 1968 September 2. is still published with the tagline ‘Discover the world’s coolest cities.’ Elliott was awarded a CBE for services to publishing in 2017 and died three years later. However, it was brought down by online competition, becoming a freesheet and dropping most of its listings in 2012, and closing in 2022. There were several attempts to challenge its dominance, including City Limits and Richard Branson’s Event magazine. Expansion saw spin-offs and editions launched in other British cities and across the world. It did not invent the concept of the events and entertainment listings weekly, but perfected the format. Time Out perfected the city listings magazineįor 50 years, Tony Elliott’s Time Out magazine was a fixture on London’s news-stands. (They were in the cabin when Kath arrived.) Through CARES, participants are offered as many as three SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests at a participating laboratory of their choice over 6 months.Īdults and parent proxies also completed a brief online questionnaire on demographic information and medical history. In the second study, published yesterday in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, a team led by University of Texas at Houston researchers analyzed data from the ongoing Texas Coronavirus Antibody Response Survey (CARES) of Texans aged 5 to 90 years from October 2020 to May 2022. "It is biologically possible that reduced viral replication and decreased inflammation could reduce the risk of neurologic complications," they wrote. They called for further study of the association of remdesivir and dexamethasone treatment with lower odds of neurologic complications. "Our findings emphasize the importance of COVID-19 immunization in children, especially in high-risk populations, such as those with neurologic co-morbidity," they wrote. The findings show that neurologic complications are common in children hospitalized with COVID-19 and are tied to worse hospital outcomes, the authors said. "However, the power to detect differences may have been limited by the relatively short portion of the study in which Omicron was the dominant circulating strain." "If true, we would expect subsequent variants to also have lower odds of neurologic complications compared to wildtype SARS-CoV-2," they wrote, adding that they found no evidence of a link between the Omicron variant and neurologic complications. The reasons for the association of a lower likelihood of neurologic complications and a Delta infection are unclear, although the link may be due to the greater proportion of children who had been either infected with the virus or immunized by that time than during the period dominated by the wild-type virus, the researchers said. Neurologic CCCs were linked to greater odds of a neurologic complication (aOR, 4.14). Lower odds of a neurologic complication were also associated with COVID-19 treatment with the antiviral drug remdesivir and/or dexamethasone, a corticosteroid. Seven percent of patients developed a neurologic complication, the most common of which were fever-triggered seizures (3.9%), non–fever-related seizures (2.3%), and encephalopathy (brain damage or disease) (2.2%).Ĭhildren with neurologic conditions had longer hospital stays, higher hospital costs, more intensive care unit (ICU) admissions (29.8% vs 21.8%), longer ICU stays (3.2 vs 2.5 days), more hospital readmissions, and higher rates of in-hospital death (1.8% vs 0.6%) than those without these conditions.įactors tied to a lower likelihood of neurologic complications included younger age (adjusted odds ratio, 0.97), infection during the Delta variant surge (aOR, 0.71), and presence of a nonneurologic CCC (aOR, 0.80). A total of 37.1% of children had a complex chronic condition (CCC), and 9.8% had at least one previously diagnosed neurologic CCC. Of the 15,137 patients, 82.1% had a primary COVID-19 diagnosis, and 17.9% had a secondary diagnosis of COVID-19 and a related complication. In a large, multicenter study published today in Pediatrics, a team led by Vanderbilt University researchers followed 15,137 COVID-19 patients aged 2 months to 17 years released from 52 US children's hospitals participating in the Pediatric Health Information System database from March 2020 to March 2022. ![]() Two new US studies describe pediatric COVID-19, one finding that 7.0% of hospitalized children developed neurologic complications such as seizures, and the other showing that even mild infections can lead to long COVID. ![]() Check out how conception calculators work. It was during this period that he wrote his best-known song, ‘Get together’, which encapsulated the philosophies of the nascent counter-culture in a few verses and quickly became a folk-circuit standard. Unable to renew his ‘cabaret licence’ in New York due to an unspecified infraction of the law, Valente decided to head for the West Coast, arriving in Los Angeles some time in 1963. In some respects, Valente’s career was defined by his brushes with the law. Valente’s origins lie in the Greenwich Village folk scene in New York City and he was a regular performer there in the early 1960’s, playing alongside the likes of Fred Neil and a fresh-faced Bob Dylan. It’s actually impossible to discuss Quicksilver without referring to the late Dino Valente, whose shadow hung over the band for years before he actually joined them at the end of the decade. This helped QMS to negotiate a better deal and more creative largesse when they did get into the studio. This proved to be something that worked to their advantage Capitol Records, having missed out on the Dead & the Airplane, were desperate to sign up a trophy San Francisco band and QMS were out there and still unsigned. They were the last of the ‘founding fathers’ of the whole Fillmore West/Haight-Ashbury heavyweights – following the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane – to sign up with a major record company. Quicksilver were always one of the most obscure of the Bay Area bands. Ah well, better than Brian Poole & the Tremeloes, I guess…. These two albums do, I suppose, have some kind of resonance for me as they provided a musical backdrop to the first ‘grande affaire’ of my life. That may be true, but the results are still extraordinary.Specifically, I’ve been listening again to what are sometimes referred to as QMS’s two ‘Hawaiian’ albums from 1970 – ‘Just for love’ and ‘What about me?’. ![]() Many Quicksilver enthusiasts dismiss this album because Hopkins so thoroughly dominates the proceedings as to make the band almost secondary. From the opening Hopkins blast on Shady Grove, to the achingly beautiful drawing room/salon type solo on Flute Song, to the countrified leanings of David Freiberg on Words Can’t Say, right up to the grandiloquent opening to the ultimate Hopkins opus, Edward, the Mad Shirt Grinder, this album has a lot going on musically. This album has none of the feel of the first two but it stands on its own as a fine recording. But, that’s what’s great about bands…people come, people go, the music changes, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Okay, look, there’s no way this album could sound the same. What an honor for Quicksilver that he chose them. Well, only the addition of a world class musician could save the band and that’s what happened when Nicky Hopkins, who had been living in San Francisco and recording with Steve Miller and Jefferson Airplane, decided to actually join a band. He was such an integral part of the band, how could they continue without him. When Gary Duncan left after 1968, it looked like the end. They had a great talent for long, exploratory jams that really took you on that acid trip. The first two Quicksilver albums are among the classics of the era. CapnometryĬapnometry is the measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaled gas (ETCO2). Mechanical dead space will result in discrepancies between ETCO2 and PaCO2 as well. We also need to be cognizant of mechanical dead space (ETT length, monitor or positional adaptors, and anywhere that bidirectional gas flow occurs). If serial measurements are taken, a decrease in this gradient indicates that the patient’s status is improving. Poor perfusion (or increased alveolar dead space ventilation) is one common reason for this. As the gradient increases (PaCO2 is increasing while ETCO2 is decreasing or staying the same), this indicates that CO2 is not effectively being eliminated and is increasing at tissue levels. The gradient can be reflected as P(a-ET)CO2, and the normal range for this is 2-5mmHg. In a normal, healthy patient this gradient, or difference, is minimal and the two are closely matched. We can evaluate this relationship using the gradient between ETCO2 and arterial CO2 levels (PaCO2) measured via arterial blood gas. Atelectasis, bronchial intubation or lung pathologies will result in lack of alveolar ventilation although alveoli are perfused. Significant hypotension, for example, will cause inadequate perfusion although alveoli are still being ventilated. Alveoli must be adequately ventilated but also adequately perfused in order for effective gas exchange to take place. ![]() We often talk about the relationship or ratio between ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q) in regards to anesthesia (V/Q). ![]() Anything that causes changes in circulation, tissue perfusion, metabolism, or ventilation can cause changes in CO2 production and elimination. CO2 will then diffuse into venous circulation, be transported to the lungs and eliminated via exhalation. This non-invasive monitor can give valuable information about cardiac output, perfusion, and ventilation.Īerobic cellular metabolism produces CO2 as a by-product. It is the measurement of CO2 at the completion of exhalation and roughly correlates to the CO2 present in arterial blood. ![]() Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, Woburn, MAĮnd-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring (ETCO2) has clinical uses far beyond solely determining hypo- or hyperventilation.
